Reaching Priests who Promote Fraternal Correction

Return to Events, News Coverage Page

September 6, 2011: After last Sunday's readings about fraternal correction from Ezekiel 33 and Matthew 18, we are forming a list of priests who publicize on their webpages the obligation of Christians to correct each other and the importance of the Church intervening when someon is in grave sin.

After finding a dozen or so such priests, we will write to all of them to advise them of our "Vindicate Rights" petion that an abandoned spuose could use to invoke the intervention of the Church.

If a faithful spouse, who has a Catholic marriage, is abandoned by the other spouse and there is no morally legitimat reason for separation, the faithful spouse can ask the local diocese to inform the abandoner authoritatively of the obligation to restore common conjugal life -- for the sake of the children and the abandoned spouse. If the abandoner refuses, the faithful spouse can also ask the Church to invoke medicinal penalties and prevent scandal.

Sample letter that faithful spouse can send to abandoner along with a couple friends/supporters.

You withdrew from marital life in "Month" of 200x". [(optional) Now you are bringing another man/woman around your children, while your spouse is not around.]

No one with a Catholic marriage may separate from their spouse without a morally legitimate reason to do so. You appear to have had no reason. No one may approach the civil courts for a state divorce decree without the permission from the bishop for their "particular" family (canon 1692). You have no such permission.

By natural and divine law, you and your spouse should share one household. You are making your children suffer grave material loss by forcing them to split the contributions both parents make into two households. Plus, your children are being scandalized as you, their mother/father, teach them by your actions that there is nothing wrong in abandoning one's spouse, and refusing to treat him/her as you vowed: "I promise to be true to you in good times and bad, in sickness and in health, I will love and honor you all the days of my life (http://www.marysadvocates.org/syllabus/RiteMarriage.html see excerpts from Catholic Marriage Rite).

We are concerned for your soul. If you received counsel from someone advising you that this is normal behavior for a professed Catholic, please let us talk to you to show you the perspective of Christ's Church.

We ask you to restore your family, for your sake and your soul and your children's soul and for the betterment of the whole Church and the civil culture.
