Spread the Word to Catholic Community

Sheryl's began corresponding with Fr. John Catoir on July 20, 2004. Fr. Catoir was the keynote speaker at North American Conference of Separated and Divorced Catholics, at the the University of notre Dame Center for Continuing Education on July 3, 2004. He graduated with a Doctorate of Canon Law from Catholic University in Washington DC in 1964. He ran the Paterson New Jersey Diocesan Marriage Tribunal for ten years.

Sherly writes:
In my ongoing e-mail dialogue with Fr. Catoir (he is the one who wrote on the internal forum for St. Anthony Messenger saying that Catholics divorced and remarried outside the Church can make up their own minds on receiving the Eucharist), he is currently upset with me because he thinks it is unfair that I blame him for the priest sex abuse scandal when he dissents on Humanae Vitae.

He thinks that artificial means of birth control are justified for "good" reasons.  The Church condemns them for all reasons.

If Catholics can sin and not call it that on birth control, I argue that other Catholics can sin (priest sex abuse) and not call it sin on other issues.

If it is good for one, it is good for all.  Fr. Catoir cannot draw the line for others after he's erased it for some.

Above all, in all honesty, he should withdraw from the Catholic priesthood for being unfaithful.  And his bishop should help him fill out the papers.  But his bishop wrote me that he's glad that I am a faithful Catholic.  Does that mean that it is my job to try to convert Fr. Catoir?

As long as he'll keep up a dialogue with me, I will try.
